Onaway boy dies after tree falls on him

ONAWAY — A 12-year-old boy from Onaway tragically died Tuesday after a tree fell on top of him, according to a press release from the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the boy, his friend, and an adult male were attempting to retrieve a chainsaw that was stuck in a tree they were cutting down.

The adult male had hooked a strap to his truck to pull the tree down. On the second attempt, the tree fell, striking the young man on the shoulder and torso area.

The tree pinned the 12-year-old male. The adult male cut the tree off and immediately began life saving actions until law enforcement and emergency medical services arrived.

CPR and life saving techniques were administered immediately. The attempts to save the boy were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased on scene. The family was immediately notified.

The Onaway Fire Department and Onaway Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Due to the boy being a student at Onaway Jr. High, the school resource officer and staff at Onaway Area Community School District were also contacted.

“At Onaway Schools, we have a team of professionals who are trained to handle the situation in a calm and compassionate manner and will be onsite (Wednesday) for support and assistance,” Superintendent Shaun Jordan said in a statement posted to Facebook Tuesday. “We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as you need.”
