ALPENA — The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame will honor five inductees at its Hall of Fame banquet on June 7.
The inductees include the following:
SUE (PIPER) GEYER – AHS 1981
Sue (Piper) Geyer established herself as one of the Alpena area’s most consistent women’s golfers over the course of more than two decades.
Geyer’s decorated golf resume is a testament to her talent and ability to win on some of Alpena’s biggest golf stages. Her many victories include a record eight women’s City Open Championships and thirteen Alpena Golf Club Women’s Club Championships.
Starting in the early 2000s, Geyer became an annual favorite to win the City Open, one of Alpena’s toughest golf tests. Geyer won her first City Open in 2002 and went on to victories in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2021. She has also finished as the runner-up three times and has taken third place twice.
Geyer earned her first Alpena Golf Club Women’s Club Championship in 2001 and added subsequent titles in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. JOHN KELLER – AHS 1978
John Keller led the Wildcats as a sprinter, hurdler, and relay team member during a standout varsity track and field career. Decades after graduating, two of his track records still stand after 40-plus years of competition. Keller becomes the latest Alpena speedster to be honored as an all-time great.
As a senior, Keller qualified for the 1978 Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A State Final in the 120-yard hurdles and finished ninth overall. Here, he blazed a time of 14.9 seconds, still the accepted school record in the high hurdles (now the 110-meter hurdles).
In addition to his hurdle prowess, Keller was a key contributor on sprint relay teams in the late 1970s. It was here that he set another 1978 school record that has yet to be bested. This time, it was as a member of the Wildcats’ 4×200-meter relay team. Keller ran the lead leg in an incredible 1:31.5 performance in the 4x200m relay alongside teammates Phil Nensewitz, Bob Woron, and Tom Denomme. Keller was also a member of a 4x100m relay team, which currently ranks fourth all-time in Alpena High history.
Keller went on to support local families and programs in a successful career with the Department of Health and Human Services in Northern Michigan.

ERIC KREBS – AHS 1970
Eric Krebs was a multi-sport star for the Wildcats, earning letters in football and baseball, including four years as a starter for the AHS baseball team. Krebs first found success as a youth on Alpena’s Junior Babe Ruth All-Star teams from 1966 to 1968, winning a state championship in 1967. He was the starting catcher on Alpena’s 1969-1971 Senior Babe Ruth All-Star teams.
Krebs also showed considerable talent on the gridiron. He played three years of football and was named Class A all-state honorable mention in his senior year.
After a successful high school career on the diamond, Krebs went on to play baseball at Olivet College. He became the team’s starting catcher as a freshman and never missed a game in four years. He earned all Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first-team honors once and second-team honors twice.
Krebs became a familiar face on local fields during and after college as he played Alpena County League baseball for several teams. In 1976, he opened the Alpena Racquet Club and went on to work for Besser Company.
Krebs later became a Michigan High School Athletic Association-certified umpire and called high school games all over Northeast Michigan. In 2000, Krebs proudly served as an umpire (3rd base) of the East-West Michigan High School All-Star game at Comerica Park alongside Curt Smith (2nd base), Dave Kuznicki (1st base), and Bill Romstadt (home plate).
MARSHA (BEAUBIEN) PARKER – AHS 2005
Marsha Parker earned nine varsity letters (two in basketball, three in volleyball, and four in softball) during her time at Alpena High School. In 2005, she earned First Team All-State in softball for her outstanding accomplishments on the field. In grade school, she was a Gatorade two-time NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick state finalist.
She went on to play college softball at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) for four years (2005-09). Possessing a combination of speed and power, she helped the Cardinals win back-to-back Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season and postseason tournament titles in 2008 and 2009.
As a senior, Parker led the GLIAC in five offensive categories (batting average, runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and steals). She averaged .396 at the plate with nine home runs and an incredible 40 stolen bases. Her 40 steals still ranks as SVSU’s single-season record. Parker also ranks 10th in both career home runs (14) and stolen bases (55).
As a result of her stellar senior season, Parker became the fourth GLIAC Softball Player of the Year for SVSU. She was also named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second-Team All-American, Daktronics Inc. Honorable Mention All-American, and Midwest Region Player of the Year.
Parker was inducted into the SVSU Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024.
