PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena swim defeats Ogemaw, Oscoda

On Tuesday, The Alpena High School boys varsity swim team traveled to Ogemaw and had a huge victory defeating the Falcons 96-71, but also Oscoda Owls 91-87.

Highlight individual swimmers for Alpena begin with Drew McConnell and Josh Short. McConnell received first in the 200-yard IM and a PR in the 100-yard Freestyle. Short received first in the 200-yard Freestyle with a PR and first in the 500-yard Freestyle.

Other mentionable swimmers include Landen Gagnon with a PR in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Freestyle, Brenden Werth with a PR in the 200-yard Freestyle and also his 500-yard Freestyle, Kaleb Werth with a PR in the 100-yard Backstroke and Linkon Meinzinger also with a PR in the 100-yard Backstroke.

“Focus, devotion, and hard work by the entire team has been demonstrated throughout the season,” coach Jennifer Johnson said. “With the combination of Coach Jacques and her continued strategic lineups and (myself) providing positive and corrective feedback in and out of the water, the team has strived.”

The Wildcats are now 9-2 with one more meet away against the Alma Panthers on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.

On Feb. 28 and March 1, the team will travel to the ISC Championship, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.

HILLMAN WINS 68-24

The Hillman boys basketball traveled to Atlanta and snapped a two-game losing streak winning 68-24 on Tuesday. Hillman led from tip to finish improving to 12-7 overall and 8-2 in the NSL. The win assured Hillman’s 16th winning season in the last 20 years.

Brenden Rouleau scored 30 points and dialed in on eight three-pointers. The eight three-pointers placed Rouleau in fourth place all-time for three-pointers in a game.

Rounding out the double-figure scoring was junior Evan Crane with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Aedan Tucker would pull in 10 rebounds and add eight points, while senior guard Cuyler Schultz would contribute 10 assists.

For Atlanta, Blake King led the team in scoring with seven.

Hillman returns to action on Friday for a varsity-only matchup against Mio. Game time is 6 p.m. with both teams currently in a first-place tie for the Little Dipper.

“Tonight was a good night!” coach Eric Muszynski said of Tuesday’s game. “The team got a lot of playing time today and everyone contributed! It was nice winning the 12th game, locking in another winning season and putting ourselves in position to compete for a league championship which is always goal number one!”

ALCONA GIRLS LOSE TO ROGERS CITY

The Alcona girls basketball team lost to Rogers City on Monday, 62-30.

Leading the Tigers were Claire Somers and Gracyn Tracy who each had seven points. Joanna Steiner wasn’t far behind with six points.

ALCONA BOYS BEAT ROSCOMMON, ROGERS CITY

On Monday, Alcona’s boys basketball team defeated Roscommon 50-42.

Leading Alcona was Garrett Somers with 12 points, Ricky Schott with 11, Evan Borsvold with 10, and Gavin Dellar with nine.

On Tuesday, the Tigers snuck by Rogers City with a 40-37 win.

Leading Alcona on Tuesday was Schott with 15 points.

“It was a slow paced, defensive battle tonight,” coach Alex Cole said of Tuesday’s game. “Rogers City played a tough 2-3 zone that we struggled to find easy buckets against. Thankfully we were able to apply some pressure defensively and convert turnovers into fast breaks points. Once again, all 8 guys showed resilience and we were able to pull out another league win.

“Tonight was Senior Night and we were able to honor our 5 seniors,” he continued. “I could not be more proud of these young men. They have developed so much on the court and even more off it. I’m proud to say they represent what Alcona Basketball is all about.”
