Alpena Community College inducts athletes into Lumberjack Legends Hall of Fame
ALPENA — Alpena Community College is set to celebrate its rich athletic history with the launch of the Lumberjack Legends Athletics Hall of Fame. The inaugural class of honorees, consisting of five standout athletes, a historic team, and a legendary coach, will be commemorated in a special ceremony on Saturday at ACC’s Besser Technical Center.
The event marks a significant moment for ACC, as the college pays tribute to individuals who have left an unforgettable mark on its athletic programs.
Among those honored will be James Dutcher, who served as ACC’s athletic director and men’s basketball coach from 1958 to 1966. Dutcher led the 1966 men’s basketball team to a Region 12 Championship and a spot in the National Junior College Athletics Association Championship tournament. This historic achievement stands out in the college’s athletic legacy.
Joining Dutcher in this year’s inductee group are five athletes who earned All-American honors during their time at ACC:
∫ John Stosick, a swimming sensation who captured the NJCAA title in the 200-meter backstroke in 1968 and finished as the runner-up in the 100-meter backstroke.
∫ Alonzo Weatherly, a standout in men’s basketball who earned NJCAA honorable mention All-American status in 1979.
∫ Diana Flakes, a powerhouse on the women’s basketball team and was named to the NJCAA second-team All-American in 1981.
∫ Jimmie Holliday, another men’s basketball star, who achieved NJCAA honorable mention All-American honors in 1987.
∫ Josh Walker, who continued ACC’s basketball legacy by earning NJCAA third-team All-American status in 2003.
The legendary 1966 men’s basketball team, under Dutcher’s guidance, will also be celebrated for their remarkable journey to the NJCAA championship tournament.
The Lumberjack Legends Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony promises to be a night of reflection, celebration, and inspiration. Alumni, students, and the local community are invited to join in honoring these exceptional individuals who have contributed to the rich athletic tradition of ACC.
The evening will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, a dinner at 6:30 p.m., and the induction program at 7:30 p.m. Former ACC Athletic Director Max Lindsay will host the event, adding to the evening’s nostalgia and pride.
Tickets for this event are available for purchase in advance, with limited seating. Prices are set at $35 per person and $15 for children 12 and under. Call the ACC Foundation at 989-358-7359 for more information and to buy tickets.
