LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Wildcats track team has meet at LSSU

On Friday, Alpena High School’s boys and girls track teams competed at Lake Superior State University in the LSSU Yooper Invite.

The boys’ team came out as champions, taking first place after stellar performances.

Boys medalists include the following: first place (55m Hurdles) – Joe Sheridan, first place (400m) – Braeden Mathis, second place (200m) – Joe Sheridan, second place (4x400m Relay) – Joe Sheridan, Austin Lasagna, Braeden Mathis, and Carson Heath, third place (1600m) – John Kurowski, fourth place (3200m) – Kenan Knight, fifth place (200m) – Thorin Rogers, sixth place (55m) – Ty Dever, and sixth place (High Jump) – Joe Schuh.

The girls’ track team took sevent place on the day.

Girls medalist include the following: second place (3200m) – Samantha Zolnierek, third place (3200m) – Izzy Szymanski, third place (Shot Put) – Melody Kauffman, fifth place (4x800m Relay) – Samantha Zolnierek, Izzy Szymanski, Amelia Roznowski, and Elizabeth Barhil, and sixth place (1600m) – Emma Dickins.

Their next meet is on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Petoskey High School.

AHS baseball wins two,

loses one

Over the weekend, the Alpena High School baseball team played three games, taking two wins and one loss.

On Friday, the Wildcats beat Bloomfield Hills, 4-1.

The team played solid defense behind Caleb McEwen, turning three double plays to get out of tough innings. McEwen threw five innings, giving up six hits and struck out five. Landen Gagnon threw two innings getting the save. Offense was led by Jake Zann who was 2-4 at the plate.

The Wildcats also defeated Warren Mott on Saturday, 16-6.

Conner Cameron got the win throwing three 2/3 innings giving up four hits, striking out one, and walking one. Tucker Bright had three hits for Alpena.

AHS also played Algonac High School on Saturday, losing 8-6.

Kaleb Donjakowski started on the mound, pitching four 2/3 innings and striking out seven. Donjakowski also collected two hits, along with Gabe Glawe. Glawe, Donjakowski, and Brady Chapman reached two RBI’s.

The Wildcats’ record now sits at 2-1.

Their next game is Wednesday at 4 p.m. at home against Gaylord St. Mary.

Alcona softball has

doubleheader

The Alcona High School softball team hosted Inland Lakes on Saturday.

The Tigers took the win in game one, 7-6, but fell short in the second game, losing 6-8.

Alcona plays tonight at home against Posen High School at 4 p.m.

AHS softball loses two games

Alpena High School’s softball team played two games on Saturday against Swan Valley High School. The Wildcats lost both game with final scores of 7-6 and 11-7.

AHS plays at Lake Orion High School on Friday.
