ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools Superintendent David Rabbideau underwent his first evaluation of the year for the position by the Board of Education at its meeting on Monday at Sanborn Elementary, one of three evaluations over 2024.

The evaluation occurred in a closed session, but Rabbideau said it went well.

“It’s our opportunity to check in and talk about the direction of the district and my leadership,” Rabbideau said. “We talked about some future plans and it really informs a lot of my goals. I don’t want to speak for the board in this case, but we’re on the right track.”

The first evaluation was meant to occur during last month’s meeting, but Rabbideau was absent.

Along with the evaluation, the Board also passed three different policy revisions. The changes are in response to Michigan Senate Bill 395, which passed in February and required changes to school policy language for staff.

While not many changes happened, an additional superintendent evaluation is required in July, and the year-end evaluation is to include a look at student growth throughout 2024.

Rabbiedau also told the board in an open session that the strategic plan is still in progress and surveys on employee engagement will be finished by the end of the school year.

Also at the meeting, the board passed a motion to purchase a subscription software for Human Resources integration and recruiting, which cost $8,400 for a one-time set-up fee and a $15,780 annual fee.

Wrapping up the meeting, in honor of Earth Day on Monday, 10 Sanborn Elementary students paid a visit and talked about what they had done in school, including a celebration of Earth Day, participating in reading activities for March, and learning math with new programs.
