Alpena Sports Hall of Fame names Boosters of the Year

ALPENA — The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame announced Mike Vought and DeAnn Roesner as its Boosters of the Year.

Both will be honored at the Hall of Fame’s annual enshrinement dinner on June 1, along with the Class of 2023 inductees: Ashley (Hunalt) Williams, Nate Barden, Eric Muszynski, and Tony Skiba III.

For many years, Vought has been generous with his time through his involvement with the Thunder Bay Basketball Association and Alpena Little League.

Vought coached T-ball in Alpena Little League several times and spent a decade serving as a coach or an assistant coach with Alpena Little League from 2003 to 2013.

For nearly two decades, he has served the Thunder Bay Basketball Association in several capacities. In 2001, he served as an assistant coach during the Thunder Bay Basketball Association season and as a coach from 2002 to 2005 during the Thunder Bay Basketball Association boys’ season. Since 2003, he has been a member of the Thunder Bay Basketball Association Board of Directors, serving 12 years as its president, two years as vice president, and three each as treasurer and secretary.

He has also been a familiar presence on the court at Thunder Bay Basketball Association games, having served as an official during both the boys’ and girls’ seasons since 2005.

Roesner served for eight seasons coaching the Thunder Bay Schooners youth swim team.

After retiring from Verizon, Roesner decided to get certified as a USA swim coach and started helping to coach a USA Team in Keller, Texas, and a U.S. Masters Team there.

Shortly after retiring to Alpena, she took over as Schooners coach. In the eight seasons she coached the Schooners, there were 49 state champions.

Roesner also oversaw the program’s growth during that time, watching the program’s numbers go from 14 during her first season to 60 by her final season, with a third of the team qualifying for the state championship at Saginaw Valley State University.

Among the Schooners’ many team and individual accomplishments during her coaching tenure, the Schooners’ 13-14 boys team won the gold medal and were state champions in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2018. They went on to win the state championship in that event in 2019. The boys aged up and, in 2020, they won the 15-18 200 freestyle relay. They came back to win the gold again in 2022.

Tickets for the enshrinement dinner can be purchased at Jimmie Garant’s Party Store or through Venmo @AlpenaSportsHallofFame.
