CURTIS TOWNSHIP — A bar fight Friday night put one man in the hospital and another in jail facing up to life in prison, the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office says.

A 33-year-old Bay City man and a 30-year-old West Branch man apparently got into an altercation in the parking lot of a bar in Curtis Township, near Glennie, police said. During the altercation, the Bay City man allegedly shot the West Branch man in the groin area, according to a Sunday news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Someone called police shortly after 11 p.m. and the first deputy arrived within a minute of the 911 call and quickly located the suspect in the parking lot. The deputy then located the West Branch man inside the bar, suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Alcona Emergency Medical Services transported the West Branch man to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, where he remained in stable condition.

Police arrested the Bay City man and took him to the Tawas City hospital for minor injuries before lodging him in the Iosco County Jail on charges of assault with intent to commit murder, a charge punishable by up to life in prison, and possession of a firearm while intoxicated causing serious impairment, a charge punishable by up to five years in prison.

The magistrate denied bond for the suspect.

Police did not release names pending the suspect’s arraignment in 81st District Court.
