Still time to register before Tuesday’s elections

ALPENA — Time has run out for people to register to vote online or to return absentee ballots via mail to have their vote counted in Tuesday’s elections in Alcona County and the Onaway area.

Time remains, however, for people to register to vote at a local clerk’s office or to submit absentee ballots in drop boxes or in person.

Voters in Alcona Community Schools and Onaway Area Schools will decide bond proposals for their school systems, while a pair of seats on the Onaway City Commission are up for grabs.

There are no other elections in the area.

By now, many people have probably requested and received absentee ballots, and there are three ways to return them to the local clerk’s office. Ballots can be dropped off at the clerk’s office in the municipality where the election is held, placed into a secure drop box often placed outside of a township office or city hall, or mailed back to local clerks.

However, the state warns people who have not yet submitted absentee ballots by mail that any disruption in mail delivery could delay the arrival of the ballot, which must be received by local clerks by Election Day.

People who want to vote but haven’t yet registered can do so until the conclusion of the election.

Now that the election is fewer than 14 days away, however, voters may only register by visiting their local clerk’s office to register in person with proof of residency documentation.

Michigan allows unregistered voters to register online, by mail, or in person before that 14-day window.

Last November, Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment that gives voters the right to vote before Election Day in person at early voting sites before statewide and federal elections. Communities may also choose to provide early voting for local elections.

Early voting will not be used during this election cycle, but is expected to be fully enacted in elections next year.
