High-speed chase spans three counties

ATLANTA — Passing motorists escaped injury when a driver led police on a high-speed chase along M-32 in Alpena, Montmorency, and Otsego counties on Wednesday evening.

Around 5 p.m., the Montmorency County Sheriff’s Office learned officers in Alpena County had been pursuing a black Kia car west on M-32, from Alpena into Montmorency County.

A Montmorency County lieutenant and a sergeant saw the vehicle as it headed east of Atlanta, traveling at an “excessive speed,” according to police.

The officers followed the Kia into Otsego County, where police stopped the fleeing car on Old State Road with the help of spike strips.

Officers arrested the driver, whose name they did not release, for fleeing and eluding.

Nobody was injured during or as a result of the chase, police said.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, the Gaylord Police Department, and the Michigan State Police helped the Montmorency County Sheriff’s Office with the pursuit.

The Montmorency County Sheriff’s Office said it would release no further information as it investigates the incident.
