ALPENA — Youg artists have the opportunity to display their work for the public to enjoy, thanks to a partnership between Alpena Public Schools and Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery.

The artwork of more than 20 students is displayed in the same location as that of 24 professional artists, at 127 W. Chisholm St. in Alpena.

Julian Shafto is one of those young artists. His colorful piece features a black hilltop castle with shades of green used for the grass and blue for the sky. He completed it this past year in fifth grade at Besser Elementary School.

“I have been doing artwork since I was little, but recently I got more into it,” Shafto said. “I feel like I’m pouring what I want to on the page and creating whatever I’m thinking of. If it’s not exactly that, it’s something better.”

The 11-year-old isn’t sure what he will do for a career, but he said he wants art to be a part of his job.

“This has really given him a lot of confidence,” said Julian’s mom, Stephanie Shafto. “His aunt (Pat Manning) works there, and he’s hoping to follow in her footsteps.”

Audrey Decker just completed 10th grade at Alpena High School. Her drawing of a boot is on display at the gallery.

“It’s a cool way to express yourself, and it’s calming, too,” she said of creating art. “I just enjoy doing it.”
