ALPENA — The Alpena Fire Department firefighters and American Red Cross Disaster Services volunteers installed more than 100 smoke detectors during a door-to-door campaign north of the Thunder Bay River on Thursday, according to an Alpena Fire Department news release.
Residents should replace all smoke alarms more than 10 years old, according to Andy Marceau, Alpena Fire Department community risk reduction officer.
Other smoke alarm tips from the National Fire Protection Association:
* Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
* Test all smoke alarms at least once a month.
* Install smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on a wall and at least 10 feet from a stove.
Residents can contact the Alpena Fire Department at 989-354-1859 to request a free, 10-year-capable smoke alarm and installation help.
The fire department also offers home safety assessments, Marceau said.
