ALPENA – Police officers and firefighters this morning gave Alpena High School students a glimpse of what could happen if they drink and drive at this weekend’s prom.

AHS juniors and seniors attended a simulated crash, in which Alpena Fire Department firefighter paramedics extricated a mock victim from a car and loaded the victim into an ambulance.

As Lt. Eric Hamp of the Alpena Police Department explained what was happening, officers conducted sobriety tests and then handcuffed the simulated driver, demonstrating what could happen if students drink and drive.

Presentations about the legal and emotional repercussions of drunk driving and possession of illegal substances followed the demonstration.

“I want you to go and have fun,” Hamp told the students. “Just do it safely.”
