ALPENA — Alpena County Jail inmate Sonny Hunn, incarcerated for concealed weapons and drug possession charges, asked on Monday to be let out of jail early because of a recent outbreak of COVID-19 among jail staff and inmates.
Hunn made the motion via attorney Ron Bayot before Judge Ed Black in Alpena’s 26th Circuit Court.
At least seven Alpena County Jail inmates and several jail staff members became sick with the infection at the end of October.
No corrections staff or inmates have tested positive for the sickness since Nov. 5, according to Alpena County Undersheriff Erik Smith. Jail staff continue to test any new or symptomatic inmates and quarantine new inmates until confirmed not positive.
Although all inmates are out of quarantine, health officials will consider the jail as under outbreak status until 28 days from the last exposure, at which point the Michigan Department of Corrections will resume accepting transfers from the jail, Smith said.
Jail staff are doing their best to make the jail safe for inmates, Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski said on Monday, opposing Hunn’s request to be released early to residential drug treatment.
Black denied Hunn’s request.
