PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena softball, baseball teams fall in district semifinals

ALPENA — The Alpena High baseball and softball teams saw their seasons end Friday in a pair of district semifinal losses to Traverse City on their home fields.
Alpena’s softball team fell to the Titans 7-2 and Alpena’s baseball team lost 14-1.
The Wildcats’ softball team struggled all game against West pitcher Brittany Steimel, who allowed just two hits and struck out 15.
West scored a run in both the second and fourth innings and then blew the game open with a grand slam from Lydia Heymes in the fifth inning.
Steimel walked to load the bases with one out and Heymes followed with a grand slam to left center to give the Titans a 6-0 lead.

West added a run in the sixth inning.
A double from Sydney Hitzelberger in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Alpena its only runs of the game.
Steimel asserted herself early, striking out the side in the first inning and fanning seven batters through three innings.
She struck out the side to end the game as well.
A single to center from Lauren Tkatch gave West a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Tkatch plated another run in the fourth after a sharp liner back to the pitcher.

West went on to defeat Mt. Pleasant 5-3 to win its first district title since 2006.
On the baseball field, the Titans got the jump on Alpena early and never looked back.
West plated nine runs in the first inning, added three more in the second and two more in the third for an eventual five-inning win.
Ryan Lee scored Alpena’s only run on a wild pitch in the second inning.
Matt Thompson led Alpena (15-15) with three hits and Logan Momrik had two. Noah Marquardt and Jake Zann each had one hit.
Travis Weide and Momrik split time on the mound for Alpena.
GIRLS TENNIS
DenBleyker competes at state finals
MIDLAND — Alpena senior Gwyn DenBleyker competed in the Lower Peninsula Division 2 state tennis finals on Friday.
DenBleyker competed against East Grand Rapids’ Ali Tol, who won 6-2 and 7-6 (4).
