PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena sweeps baseball twinbill; Alpena girls soccer season ends

HILLMAN–The Alpena baseball team took a pair of games from Hillman on Thursday, winning 16-0 and 19-4.

In the opener, Alpena scored in every inning, scoring eight runs combined in the first four innings and then eight more in the fifth inning.

Alpena finished with 12 hits, including two each from Keegan Hahn and Kaydn Budnik. Travis Weide had three RBI and Ryan Lee and Jake Zann each had two RBI.

AJ Jones singled for Hillman’s only hit and pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with a strikeout and five walks.

Hahn and Kim Potter split time on the mound for Alpena, striking out six and walking two.

In the second game, Alpena once again scored in every inning, which included six runs in the third inning and four runs each in the fourth and fifth inning.

Hillman’s runs all came in the second inning.

Matt Thompson led Alpena with four hits and two RBI; Charlie Williams, Alex Cadarette and Zann each had two hits and Zann, Potter and Ryan Lee each had two RBI.

Lee and Thompson split time on the mound for Alpena. Lee went three innings, allowing four runs and two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Thompson pitched two scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Jones had a single for Hillman (18-15-1) and Jaden Dove had a single and scored a run. Trenton Taratuta pitched 2 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out four.

TRACK AND FIELD

Alcona wins NSL Big Dipper Championships

WHITTEMORE–The Alcona boys and girls track teams took top honors at the North Star League Big Dipper Championships on Thursday.

Alcona’s boys team won 13 events and Alcona’s girls team won nine. Alcona’s boys team finished with 176 points, well ahead of Whittemore-Prescott (52) and the rest of the field. Alcona’s girls team finished with 140 points, ahead of second-place Rogers City (66).

Results from the meet will run in a future edition of The News.

GIRLS SOCCER

Petoskey 4, Alpena 1

ALPENA–The Alpena girls soccer team’s season came to an end on Thursday with a 4-1 loss to Petoskey in a Division 2 district quarterfinal.

Kami Schultz scored the lone goal for the Wildcats.

JV BASEBALL

Alpena tops Mackinaw City

ALPENA–The Alpena JV baseball team easily took a pair of games from Mackinaw City on Thursday at home, winning 15-0 and 17-2.

In the first game, Alpena pulled away after a nine-run second inning.

Gabe Glawe and Kaleb Donajkowski each had two hits and three RBI for Alpena and Brady Niedzwiecki had a hit and two RBI.

Brady Pagels and Brady Kollen saw time on the mound for Alpena, combining to strike out six, walk two and allow no hits.

Alpena took control of the second game early, scoring 12 runs in the first inning.

Caleb McEwen and Bryce Moe each had two hits for Alpena and Moe, Landen Spomer and Grant Jarema each had two RBI. Kollen and Moe saw time on the mound, combining to walk three, strike out four and allow two runs on one hit.
