A haze of plaster dust fills the room as firefighters burst through a wall during a training exercise today at a burned house on the corner of 11th Avenue and Sable Street in Alpena.
ALPENA — Streets surrounding the intersection of 11th Avenue and Sable Street in Alpena were closed portions of today — and will close again Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — as firefighters train inside a house that burned in July when a cigarette was left unattended.
Before the building is razed, the Alpena Fire Department was given permission to use the building as a real-life training ground.
Firefighters crashed through doors and broke through lath and plaster walls as trainers urged them to work as though lives were at stake — which, in a real fire situation, they may well be.
