Fournier, Thomson hold on to county board seats

Brenda Fournier

ALPENA — Brenda Fournier and Marty Thomson will hold onto their seats on the Alpena County Board of Commissioners, according to unofficial results from Tuesdays Republican primary.

Fournier, in the county board’s District 5, had 375 votes to challenger Mike Sobeck’s 334.

Thomson, in the county board’s District 7, had 638 votes to challenger Cam Habermehl’s 405 votes.

With no Democrats on Tuesday’s ballot, both Thomson and Fournier will automatically win in November unless challenged by a write-in candidate.

Fournier was able to hold off political newcomer Sobek, but it was a close race that wasn’t decided until the wee hours of the morning today.

Fournier said he is grateful that residents in her district continue to have faith in her and allowed her to serve another term.

“I am truly humbled,” she said.

Fournier said she is eager to get to work on county issues, and one of her goals is to get the county back on stable financial ground.

“We need to see better numbers in our budget,” she said. “That is my number-one goal right now.”

The county is expected to have a more than $1 million budget shortfall at the end of the year that would have to be covered by the county’s savings. Fournier has been an advocate for cutting spending.

Thomson was appointed to the board last year to replace Kevin Burr, who stepped down to pursue a new career opportunity.
