Records: Avery photographed 4-H girls

ALPENA — Bradley Avery, the former Alpena County Fair Board treasurer who admitted to stealing money during his board tenure, is now accused of taking unclothed photographs of 4-H members and possessing pornography involving a pre-teen child, court records indicate.

Avery — who in May 2019 pleaded guilty to embezzling at least $16,000 over a three-year period — waived his first appearance before a judge on Tuesday after being arrested on May 27.

Avery waived his arraignment before Judge Thomas LaCross, scheduled for Tuesday morning, and entered a not-guilty plea to one count of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material (a felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years), three counts of capturing or distributing images of an unclothed person, and one count of using computers to commit a crime.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred in August 2017 and April 2019.

Avery is accused of taking pictures of two girls in their underwear and of the naked breasts of a third. All three alleged victims are listed in Michigan State University records as recent Alpena County 4-H participants.

The News does not identify victims of sexual assault.

One of the alleged victims shared a victim impact statement at Avery’s sentencing for the embezzlement charges, describing him as a former 4-H leader who had betrayed her trust by stealing the money.

Avery was released on bond shortly after his arrest. He is next scheduled to appear in court on June 18.
