Wet September, but not the wettest

ALPENA — The month of September was a wet one, with almost four inches of rain falling, surpassing the normal September precipitation by almost an inch but still not breaking records.

In September, 3.88 inches of rain fell in Alpena, according to the National Weather Service. The normal rainfall for the month of September is 2.92 inches.

Two daily rainfall records were set in September. On Sept. 5, 1.58 inches of rain fell, breaking the old record for that day of 1.17 inches set in 2008. On Sept. 20, 0.96 inches of rainfall tied an old record for that day set in 1931.

Sabrina Jauernic, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said the rain total from September wasn’t in the top 10 for records.

“We’ve had wetter Septembers,” Jauernic said. “Falls are usually pretty wet and rainy.”

The hottest temperature for the month was 88 degrees. The lowest temperature was 38 degrees on Sept. 27.

During the first half of the month, temperatures were in the 70s and 80s, but temperatures went down to the 60s and 70s the second half of the month. Jauernic said that is due to an equinox that occurs every year.

“We’ve lost daylight, so it typically cools off in a short time span,” she said.

For the rest of the week, Jauernic said the area should have normal temperatures. She said temperatures should be around the 60s for the weekend.

“After thunderstorms tonight, it should dry out,”‘Jauernic said.

In the middle of the month, a cold pattern will hit the area.
