Alpena man arrested in shooting

Shortly after 7 p.m., the Alpena Police Department was called to the 700 block of Sable for was what called a drive-by shooting where there was one known injured person. The victim, a 33-year-old Alpena man, was taken to Alpena Regional Medical Center.
A suspect and suspect vehicle were quickly identified and area law enforcement was notified. At 8:13 p.m., a deputy from the Alcona County Sheriff Department observed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle at the intersection of M-65 and M-72 and followed the vehicle westbound on M-72 until units from the Oscoda County Sheriff Department and the Michigan State Police arrived to assist with the traffic stop outside of Fairview.
The suspect is in the Alpena County Jail where he awaits charges that under review by the Alpena County Prosecutor’s Office.
Neighbor Tom Christensen said he’s the caretaker of the house where the shooting apparently occurred, and he’d been mowing his back lawn when he heard five loud pops. At first he thought they were firecrackers or some noise from his next door neighbor, but when he went to look he saw a man lying on the ground. It was one of the house’s tenants, and Christensen said he was on his way to the hospital to see how he was.
“I lived in Southern California for 20 years, and I saw a little bit of this out there,” he said. “But I never expected to see it here.”
Both Christensen and his wife made statements to the police, and Alpena County sheriff’s deputies were seen speaking to other residents on the block. Michigan State Police troopers and Alpena Police Department officers were there as well. Other bystanders said they’d heard the gunshots as well, including one who’d also seen a man lying on the ground.
The Alpena Police Department was assisted by the Alpena County Sheriff Department, the Michigan State Police, the Alcona County Sheriff Department, Oscoda County Sheriff Department, and paramedics from the Alpena Fire Department.
The investigation is ongoing.
