Elowski trial canceled
Michelle Elowski
ALPENA — Michelle Elowski, a former Alpena attorney accused of embezzling money from clients and other crimes, has had her trial slated for the end of the month canceled, according to the Oscoda County 23rd Circuit Court office.
The court told The News that Elowski will be sentenced on Feb. 18, which indicates she may have reached a plea deal with the prosecution.
Elowski’s attorney Ravi R. Gurumurthy would not comment on whether Elowski agreed to a deal or the proposed terms of it.
The News placed a call to the Oscoda County Attorney Prosecutor Kristi McGregor seeking details of the case.
The investigation of fraud claims began in February 2023 when the Michigan State Police received allegations of an alleged embezzlement by Elowski. Through that inquiry, MSP began an investigation of a series of embezzlement cases where she had allegedly stolen money entrusted to her by multiple clients who had retained her to represent them in divorce, probate, and other civil matters.
Elowski was arrested on Feb. 1 of last year in Alpena and arraigned the next day in Mio.
On April 3, 2024, the Michigan State Supreme Court barred Elowski from practicing law.
Elowski’s trial was delayed once last year and was slated to begin on Jan. 31 before the cancellation.
Elowski is also facing a civil suit from victims in Alpena County.
