On May 25, at approximately 4:15 p.m. Alpena County Central Dispatch received a call from a stranded boater on Lake Huron. The Alpena County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division was dispatched northeast of Thunder Bay Island for a 20-foot fishing boat that had motor issues. The owner said that his engine quit working, cell phone service was hit and miss, and he had four persons on board. Officers located the fishing boat approximately 4.5 miles northeast of Thunder Bay Island and towed it into the Alpena Small Boat Harbor.
While responding, officers received a request for assistance on the marine emergency radio for a 51-foot powerboat south of Thunder Bay Island whose dingy was breaking loose from its mounting platform on the back of the boat and causing issues. Due to the rough seas the boat was unable to stop to assess its issues. After making contact, the boat continued to the Alpena Small Boat Harbor and arrived with no issues.
