ALCONA COUNTY - The Alcona Historical Society invites the community to a special program to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Sturgeon Point Life Saving Station, in operation from 1876-1941. The special guest is author and historian Frederick Stonehouse, who will present “Forgotten Heroes, The U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes.” The men of this remarkable organization displayed incredible courage and bravery in rescuing over 55,000 people from potential death on the Great Lakes. Aid by the Dozen update

ALPENA — The April meeting of the Aid by the Dozen was at the 19th Hole and hosted by Catherine Murphy. During the meeting, thank you notes were read and this month's donation went to the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan. Secret pals receiving gifts were Sherry Allen, Marlene, Montie Leora, Jacobs, Nancy Belanger, and Lori Zeller. Marlene also won the hostess gift provided by Catherine who also served delicious homemade desserts. The evening ended with great conversations. The May meeting will be hosted by Tammy Daleski on May 20.

ALPENA — The Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) will hold their annual meeting on May 14 at noon at the First United Methodist Church at 167 Ripley Blvd in Alpena. Les Nixon will be with us to bring you up to date on Insurance, pension and what is happening in Lansing and answer any question you might have for him. A catered lunch(payable at the door) is available for $12.50 or you may bring your own lunch. Reservations are needed and must be made by May 7 by calling or texting Ruth LeBarre at 989-506-8876.
