ALPENA — Alpena Community Credit Union recently made a $5,000 donation to support Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan’s “Discover Northeast Michigan History” exhibit, set to open by Dec. 31.
Donations of $500 and more received by Sept. 15 will be listed on the new exhibit’s permanent donor wall.
Besser Museum is grateful for the continued support of Alpena Community Credit Union.
ACCU was organized in 1952 as the Alpena General Hospital Federal Credit Union. Business was conducted in the hospital at the desk of Evelyn Schrader, who also held the position of comptroller of Alpena General Hospital. In 1968, they changed their charter from a federal charter to a state charter. In 1977, the bylaws were amended to include all medical personnel in Alpena County and the credit union name changed to Alpena County Medical Credit Union. The Credit Union purchased a building located at 129 E. Campbell St. that same year. The credit union relocated to its current address in 1987. In October of 2002, membership was expanded to include anyone who resided in, was employed in, owned property in, or worshipped in Alpena County. In 2006, the name changed to Alpena Community Credit Union and membership extended to include not only Alpena County but Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties.
ACCU is committed to building strong communities and have made contributions to several other local organizations throughout the years, including Habitat for Humanity, Michigan Brown Trout Festival, a bench for the Community Labyrinth, Boys and Girls Club of Alpena, Alpena Community College’s Vanlare Hall Renovation project, and Huron Shores Lights for the ball field.
