MLK Jr. Committee discussion Oct. 4

Emmitt Till

ALPENA — Join the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of NE Michigan in its discussion of the story of Emmitt Till, an African American 14-year-old boy who was brutally murdered in 1955 after being accused of offending a white woman. His murder shocked the country and galvanized some to respond to the racism of the day. His mother insisted that the casket remain open for all to see.

Jan Charter will be the discussion leader for this October conversation.

The discussion will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. at 7 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 119 W. Dunbar St., Alpena, and by Zoom. To request the Zoom link, email ABelovedCommunity.Alpena@gmail.com

The movie “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” is available through Kanopy–the library movie option (available with an Alpena County Library card). There are other online sources about this event.

The November Beloved Community Discussion topic will be on Native American Heritage Month, led by Sandra Pilgrim-Lewis at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
