ALPENA — Twelve teams from area elementary schools recently competed in 16 science and engineering events in the sixth annual Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament at Alpena Community College.

The top placing schools were: 1. Besser Elementary, 2. C.O.A.C.Homeschoolers, 3. Immanuel Lutheran, 4. Hillman Elementary, 5. Hinks Elementary, 6. All Saints Catholic School. Each team could have had up to 15 students in grades 3-6 competing. Schools were allowed to field more than one team. This year, four schools fielded two teams each. This is an annual event and any elementary schools in the 14 counties of Northeast Michigan are eligible to participate. Events varied across the sciences, but included topics like Crime Buster, Bottle Rocket, Pasta Mobile, Tree-mendous, Anatomy, Rock Hound, Straw Egg Drop, and many more.
