Aircraft club meets on second Mondays

When you hear the sound of an airplane do you look up and try to spot the lucky pilot as he or she flies over?

Have you ever imagined yourself piloting an airplane or maybe just being a smiling passenger as you enjoy the view from the lofty perch?

Flying or owning an airplane may have been just a far-off dream, but some of your friends and neighbors have made that dream of flight a reality. And some of those men and women share their love of flight every month at the Alpena airport out on M-32. A local club, part of a nationwide organization called the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) meets monthly. Alpena is home to chapter 1021. Meetings are open to those who have an interest in aviation, whether it be a dream to build and fly your own airplane, or just tag along with someone who flies and welcomes the company of others who enjoy seeing the countryside from a thousand feet above the treetops.

EAA, chapter 1021, meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, which means they are meeting tonight. The public is invited to attend EAA chapter meetings and new members are always welcome.

Not that many years ago, anyone could drive up to an airport, get out of their vehicle and walk to the flight line and inquire about a ride from a local pilot. Since Sept. 11, 2001, things have changed and airport security is much tighter. Add to that the fact that the Alpena airport is home to the National Guard, it’s a military airfield as well as a civilian facility, which further enhances restrictions on access to the field.

To attend a chapter meeting, contact President Don Grabiel to arrange for a pass to enter the airport and meet some of the EAA members. Parking is just outside the fence and there is a walk-through gate to the EAA clubhouse/hangar. You don’t have to be a pilot or own an airplane to attend. You just need to have an interest in aviation. For access, call Grabiel at 989-464-5348.
