annual meeting Wednesday

Thunder Bay Audubon Society will hold its annual meeting at noon on Wednesday at the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan conference room, with a light soup lunch. Election of officers for 2020 will be held, planning for next year will begin, and the Christmas Bird Count will be discussed.

Amateur Radio class, exams

The Alcona County Amateur Radio Group is offering a free Two-Day FCC Technician Level Amateur Radio Class.

The class will be held for five hours each day on Sunday, Oct. 27, and Sunday, Nov. 3, beginning at noon both days. Study material must be completed prior to the class sessions, at the Alcona EMS/EOC building at 2600 East M-72, six miles west of U.S.-23 on the south side.

An FCC Exam Session for all Amateur Radio levels will be held on Nov. 3 starting at 4 p.m., immediately following the conclusion of the Technician class — the standard FCC Exam fee applies. Contact Stan Darmofal, W8SZ on 989-724-5550 to obtain additional details and to register for the class and/or exam session.

Costume Run/Walk Nov. 2

The Thunder Bay River Costume Run/Walk is back for a third year, on Nov. 2 at the Alpena County Fairgrounds. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Alpena Plaza Pool. There will be a 1-mile run/walk, 5K run/walk, and a 10K(ish) run. Kids 5 and younger are free, ages 6-12 are $10, and 13 and older are $20. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Merchant’s Building with the 1-mile starting at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K and 10K both starting at 10 a.m. Participants can also do the Duo (participate in the 1-mile run/walk and then either the 5K or 10K) at no extra cost.

Scouts taco dinner at First Congregational Saturday

Scouting has returned to First Congregational Church in Alpena. Earlier this summer Boy Scout Troop 78 and Cub Scout Pack 3078 were restarted after several years of inactivity. This Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., the church is hosting a taco dinner fundraiser to help support the scouting programs. Tickets are available at the door. Members of both units will be on hand to greet everyone and answer questions regarding the programs. Onaway VFW Post 5857 4-wheeler raffle winners set

Cindy Hubble of Lewiston was the first prize winner in the recent four-wheeler raffle at Onaway VFW Post 5857. Bev Baker of Alanson was the second prize winner.

The VFW appreciates those who donated their time and effort in selling tickets, Brewbakers Housing & RV for sponsoring ticket printing, and all those who purchased tickets.

Swiss steak dinner today

A Swiss steak dinner is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Alcona Masonic Lodge, 316 E. Traverse Bay, Lincoln. Adults are $12 and kids 12 and under are $6 each.

Agent Orange Riders Sat.

The Agent Orange Riders will meet at noon Saturday at VFW Post 2496, 2900 Connon St., Alpena.

Alpena Sportsmen’s Club sight-in days Nov. 1-14

Alpena Sportsmen’s Club is having their annual sight-in days to get ready for deer season.

From Nov. 1 through 14, ranges will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for sighting in guns. The cost is $5 per person and you must have eye protection and ear protection. Check in at the club house. Any questions, call 989-354-4964.
