AHS Class of 1959

celebrates 60th reunion

Alpena High School Class of 1959 had 52 classmates gather at the APlex to celebrate their 60th reunion. Out-of-state attendees came from California, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Kansas.

Each classmate was given a bookmark with a picture of AHS and 1959 fun facts. The table centerpieces, provided by Lasting Expressions, highlighted the chrysanthemum, the class flower.

At the end of the evening the classmate at each table whose birthday was closest to the June 12 graduation date was given the centerpiece.

Music was provided by the Thunder Bay Sax Quartet. Chairman Carol Wegmeyer Grabow introduced the committee members, Patti Jerome Tucker, Helen Scott Crandall, and Fred Wegmeyer. The invocation was given by Jim Sylvester. JJ’s Catering served dinner and dessert.

Emcee Helen Crandall announced that it was classmate Larry Dziesinski’s birthday and the wedding anniversary of classmate Fred Wegmeyer and his wife Carolynne.

Crandall initiated a discussion regarding a future reunion and asked for a volunteer to chair the next celebration.

Patti Jerome Tucker prepared a “Remember When” table of pictures of classmates and the activities they had participated in during their high school years.

Attendees were also impressed with the Memorial Table with pictures of all deceased class members and dates of death.

Harvey Neumann added fun and laughter to the party when he led the group in singing the Alpena High Loyalty Song and also an AHS round he had written.

The reunion was a big success and classmates indicated they are looking forward to the next reunion, which Judy Manning Jones volunteered to chair.

AHS/CCHS Class of 1956 celebrates reunion

The 1956 classes of Alpena High School and Alpena Catholic Central High School joint class reunion was held Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Thunder Bay River Restaurant. Classmates previously met Friday evening for a meet and greet.

John Pettyes welcomed the attendees. Kenneth Summerix opened with prayer. A moment of silence was observed for deceased classmates. A buffet dinner was served, followed by visiting.

Don Deadman provided background music.

Elaine Brezinski Aikens again sang the “Wiffenpoof Song,” a tradition she started years ago at reunions. Her classmates joined in on the chorus.

On Sunday morning, Alpena High School classmate Al Hendrickson hosted a breakfast at Ramada Inn, providing reunion attendees another opportunity to socialize.

Class members came from Florida, Minnesota, Tennessee, and many parts of Michigan.

Reunion committee members were Bill and Dorothy Foster, Shirley Anderson Cliburn, Regina Besaw Thompson, Irma McDonald Schuelke, Richard Kraft, John Kauffman, Kay Harris Young, Joan Dignam Chrzan, Don Witt, Don Deadman, Marlene Siewert Bartz, Darlene Egelski Edwards, Mike McGirr, John Pettyes, Jim Mott, Al Hendrickson, Karen Stevenson Szymanski, Joel Rouleau, Geraldine DeKett LaHaie, and Janet Sandborn Southwell.
