Teen program at ACL

Anyone ages 12 to 18 is invited to join Reading Across the Universe, the Alpena County Library’s summer reading program for teens. Out-of-this-world activities are scheduled each week. Participants in the program can earn tickets for grand prize drawings by attending programs and reading.

The program started on July 2. Upcoming activities include:

¯ July 10 — 1 to 3 p.m., Galaxy ornaments and pinwheels

¯ July 16 — 1 to 3 p.m., Out-of-this-world buttons

¯ July 23 — 10 a.m. to noon, Solar viewing party

¯ July 26 — 10 to 11 a.m., star party at Starlite Beach for all ages

¯ July 27 — 2:30 p.m., Exploring the Universe afternoon movie

¯ July 30 — 10 a.m. to noon, Astrodash game

¯ Aug. 8 — 3 to 5 p.m., Wrap-up party with games, a movie, prizes and snacks.

Bridge winners told

Alpena Duplicate Bridge Club winners this week were Marcy Sherman and Beverley Rousseau in first, Mark Wolshon and Dale Middleditch in second, and Linda Clegg and Audrey Stevens in third. Summer swim

lessons start this week

Swim lessons are offered from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in six different sessions starting today at the Plaza Pool. Pick a session or do them all. Each session costs $50 per child.

Session 4 — July 29 to Aug. 1

Session 5 — Aug. 5 to 8

Strawberry Social at First Presbyterian

The community is invited to the 34th annual Strawberry Social at the First Presbyterian Church, on the corner of U.S.-23 at Long Rapids Road.

The cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child. Takeouts are available.

Proceeds will be used for children at risk in the area.

AHS Class of 1953 to meet Wednesday

Grief After Suicide support series starting

A Grief After Suicide support group series starts Wednesday, for those who have been affected by a loved one’s suicide. This four-week series will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Dates and topics include:

¯ July 10 — The Grief Experience

¯ July 17 — Busting the Myths of Grief

¯ July 24 — The Power of Journaling

¯ July 31 — Building Resilience

The cost to attend this series is $20. Light refreshments will be provided.

Meetings will be held at Abundant Life Christian Guidance, PLLC, 115 N. 1st Ave., Ste. 103, Alpena.

Outside Eats for kids at Art in the Loft

Kids ages 5 and older can learn how to make delicious outdoor summertime treats with Outside Eats, offered from 10 a.m. to noon this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Art in the Loft.

The cost is $20 per class or $60 for the series. Scholarships are available. Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships.
