Local author to sign books at Olivet

Presque Isle County resident Sharon Underwood will be at Olivet Book & Gift Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

She will be signing copies of the book “Faith and Freedom,” which includes her award-winning short story “Liberty From Within.”

The book is an anthology of short stories in a “Chicken Soup for the Soul” type format.

Underwood grew up in Alpena, lived out west for 30 years, retired in 2007, and moved back to Michigan in 2012. She lives on property that has been in her family since 1935, north of Rogers City on Lake Huron’s Hammond Bay.

She graduated from Alpena High School in 1960. She worked for a newspaper in Tuscan, Ariz., and has always enjoyed writing.

“I’ve always wanted to do a little writing,” Underwood said.

She has had poetry published in The Alpena News before, but this is her first time being published in a book.

Underwood’s inspiration for the short story was her grandson.

“My grandson got out of jail on July 4th,” she said, adding that he had a horrible experience with drugs and that in the theme of “Faith and Freedom,” she thought that experience leant itself to a good story to tell.

She was one of several selected at the Maranatha Christian Writers Conference to be featured in the book.
