VFW 2496 Aux. plans for Memorial weekend

The May regular meeting of the VFW 2496 Auxiliary was called to order at 6 p.m. on May 14 by incoming president Gail Morrison, with 13 members present. There were no new applications for membership. The secretary and treasurer reports were given and approved.

A report was presented on the success of the Friday fish fry and state VFW pool tournament. Cheryl announced that the grave flags are being placed at the cemeteries and will be finished before Memorial weekend. A memorial service for members who passed in the last year was held at the district meeting May 4 in Harbor Springs attended by four auxiliary members of 2496.

Updates on the Polish dinner/dance and the June 14 steak fry were given. It was announced that there are two upcoming patriotic parades that members are encouraged to participate in. The first is Memorial Day in Alpena and the other is VJ Day Aug. 10 in Hillman. The post requested help selling Buddy Poppies Friday and Saturday during Memorial weekend. A discussion took place about scholarship money for the Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy contest winners, which need to be awarded.

The newly elected officers for the 2019-2020 year were installed by past president Barb LaMay at the end of the meeting. Closing ceremonies were conducted and the meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. The next regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. on June 11.
