Zonta Club of Alpena recently distributed net proceeds of $16,745 from the Oct. 1, 2016, Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/5K Run.
Approximately 380 individuals participated in the 10th annual event held at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Since its inaugural walk/run in 2007, the club has raised a total of $220,813 and enhanced the breast health services for thousands of women throughout the area.
Partner sponsors from the 2016 event included Besser Credit Union, Alpena Radiology, PC and MC Sports. In addition, a total of 30 area businesses lent their financial support with sponsorship ranging from $250 to $1,000.
Zonta has been dedicated to raising awareness regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer as well as raising funds for various entities, including the Mammography Subsidy Fund, Friends Together’s Tees & Tops, Touch of Beauty and local wig programs.
Walk co-chair Sarah Moe said, “I am so grateful for the outpouring of community support from participants, to donors, to area businesses that year after year makes this event so successful.”
Plans are underway for the 11th annual walk that is scheduled for Oct. 7. Anyone interested in getting involved through sponsorship or participation in the event, should call Moe at 464-8450 or Aneka Wagner at (208) 339-4054.
The Zonta Club of Alpena was chartered in 1963 and is an international service organization comprised of women working together to enhance the status of women both locally and globally. For more information about becoming a member, contact Wagner, who serves as membership chair.
