It was a tough night for the Alpena girls soccer team as they ran into a talented Gaylord team and were overmatched, losing by a final score of 8-0.

“Overmatched is the key word. We were overmatched physically, technically and tactically by girls who were better athletes and better soccer players,” Alpena soccer coach Tim Storch said.

Gaylord was in control right from the opening whistle and found the back of the net four times in the first half to take a commanding lead into the break.

From there, the Blue Devils didn’t let up and continued to put the pressure on Alpena and eventually went on to score the eighth goal to mercy the Wildcats with 17 minutes to go in the game.

“Our girls are trying hard and they are getting better, but this is a process and one that is going to take years not just days. Despite what the scoreboard indicated, both of our goaltenders did everything they could and I thought they played well. They didn’t much of a chance on any of the goals and Gaylord is a good team who is always near the top of the Big North Conference,” Storch said.

With the loss, Alpena falls to 2-2 overall and are 1-2 in the conference and will be back in action on Monday against Sault Ste. Marie.

Despite the tough loss tonight, the Wildcats have started the year with an even record and that is something that Storch hopes his team can build upon as the continue to face good competition throughout the season.

“It’s been a tail of two seasons so far. We can compete with the teams that have the same level of ability as us, but sometimes when we play teams above our ability the result isn’t as good. Unfortunately being in the Big North, there is a ton of great teams so at times it will be a tall order for our team to stay competitive game in and game out, but I’m proud of the girls for working hard and not quitting,” Storch said.
