Change is coming
Mon, June 29, 2009 @ 1:49PM
The MHSAA released a list of schools that will host boys and girls basketball districts last week and it looks like some teams are going to be seeing different postseason foes. For area teams this mainly occurs in two districts. Onaway and Johannesburg-Lewiston are being shipped more toward the west side of the state where they will be up against the likes of Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian, Gaylord St. Mary, Wolverine and Vanderbilt. Wolverine is the host for both the boys and the girls. The other big change involves another area Class D district, which could be just as appropriately titled the North Star League Invitational, with Atlanta, Fairview, Hale, Hillman, Mio and Posen taking part. Hale, which drops down to Class D, is the host for boys districts, while Mio is the girls host. The other districts involving area schools are remaining the same.

America's birthday, Alpena style
Wed, July 1, 2009 @ 7:05PM
Alpena during the Fourth of July is a great place to be, and it's starting to feel like a holiday weekend even though we're only on Wednesday. There are a few more people around town (and some more traffic) the chamber office has the judge's stand in front of its building for the parade Saturday, AND the Nina and Pinta made their way up the river to dock for the Maritime Festival. Thousands of people line the streets for the parade, dozens of contestants take part in the sand sculpture contest (there really are very few castles), and thousands go to the Maritime Festival. This year the evening's fireworks have an additional opening act. The city band will play early in the evening, but the Concert in the Park series has a '70s band that will play up to dusk, just in time for the fireworks. There really is something for everyone, and finding something to do shouldn't be difficult. Now, if only Mother Nature cooperates. The forecast isn't very participation-friendly.

Dora the Explorer
Wed, July 1, 2009 @ 2:03PM
My passion and love for the outdoors started early in life thanks to the influence of my father and grandfather, but mostly grandpa. Many a summer day would be spent on the boat fishing. Those days are some of the more precious ones of my youth, and those days instilled in me a passion for fishing that pulls hard on me every chance I can get this time of year. I have to admit, however, I have been questioning my own ability and talent this year. With a few exceptions here and there, this has been a summer of little success for me. My "honey hole" even has been dry this year which was especially frustrating as it is a place I always take youth to so they, like me years ago, can get a great introduction to the sport. When I took my great-neice there earlier this summer, however, it was zip, zero, nothing.

Hot group in cool city
Thu, June 18, 2009 @ 3:34PM
It's not that I'm wishing my life away, but once I grow older and have retired from my current job, I will certainly look forward to joining the Association of Lifelong Learners at Alpena Community College. For one thing, I like the group because of what its name implies - lifelong learning. How cool is that concept? But even better, is the fun this group has in pursuit of keeping active and busy with all manner of subjects that hold their interest. Take today for example. ALL hosted a My Favorite Things gathering in ACC's Park Arena, where various members and a few others from the community filled up the college gymnasium with exhibits of their favorite hobbies, collections or organizations that they are involved in. There was everything from an interest in the Civil War, pie making, travel and calligraphy to collections of butterflies, teapots, nesting dolls and model airplanes.

The obligatory “welcome to my blog” post
Tue, June 30, 2009 @ 3:52PM
Hi, y'all ...I mean YOU GUYS... and welcome to my blog here at The Alpena News. My name is Caroline, and I moved to Michigan from Arkansas to work here as a news designer. That means I put the stories on the pages and arrange them so you, the audience can enjoy the work of our talented reporting staff. I also happen to have a passion for the internet, and I've been really excited to start getting The Alpena News up to speed on all the social networking sites. Twitter, Facebook, Myspace? We're there now. Be our friend! Other than that, I enjoy writing and taking pictures, so you might even be seeing my name under a photo or at the top of a story every once in awhile. Basically, I enjoy wearing as many hats as possible, and I'm usually all over the place – figuratively and literally. In the past four years I've lived [sometimes for short periods of time] in Little Rock, Ark; Columbia, Mo.; Stuttgart, Germany; Dallas, Texas; London, UK; San Francisco, Calif.
