March has arrived
Mon, March 1, 2010 @ 5:45PM
By my clock, girls basketball district action officially gets under way in less than an hour. I've used all the information I've gathered this year and I've come up with my predictions for the district winners of the four districts involving area teams. Without wasting any more time, here they are: Gaylord district: Traverse City West. The Titans shared the Big North Conference title with Petoskey and have been solid all year. Head coach Patti Tibaldi has been here before, plus they did earn an impressive victory over the Northmen, who some feel could get all the way to the Breslin Center. I think TC West cruises through the district, though Traverse City Central figures to be the biggest challenger. Alcona district: Alcona. The Tigers have improved steadily over the year. New head coach Dan O'Connor has proven to be a good replacement for John Katona. Transfers Megan and Carolynn Miller have meshed with the rest of the team and given them a good inside presence.

Leaving Alpena, The News ... based on a true story
Thu, March 11, 2010 @ 2:41PM
Alpena is in my bones. I was born here. I've seen people I love born here. I've helped bury people I love here. If a breeze off Thunder Bay is my last breath, I have no qualms. For most of 25 years, I've grown to know the men and women of this town. They are people who build things - structures, businesses, families, bonds and love - people who donate blood, sweat and tears to causes greater than their own. Every town has a story, and it should not be surprising how Alpena's begins. In 1856 Daniel Carter brought his family here to oversee land to be used for lumbering. For five years the family was more or less completely alone. I still see Carters' courage and toughness here. That's why it's hard as hell to leave. I might not have said that seven years ago. I'm not sure I would have said that three years ago. But over the past three years, I've made sense of everything I knew and felt about Alpena and realized how great of a place it really is.

Oh the madness
Mon, March 15, 2010 @ 1:49PM
So the brackets are drawn and the pairings are announced. As the brackets were revealed, my worst nightmare began to appear — again. Michigan State was in the Friday-Sunday part of the draw. It seems every year the Spartans have the last game on Friday night, meaning we don't get out of the newsroom until going on 1 a.m., which makes for a very long day when you consider I'm here by about 1 p.m. Selection Sunday can be a bit tiresome after a while. The same talking heads making the same points over and over and over and over and ... You get the point. If you aren't a big basketball fan, think politics constant chat about the same two talk points ad nauseam. There's Dick Vitale with his tiresome rant about an ACC team getting short-changed; coaches complaining about their draw. If not for my interest in watching “Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks” 30 in 30 film I'd have turned off the TV in the office.

Who says there's no jobs?
Sun, March 14, 2010 @ 8:04PM
Well it's official. Michigan's unemployment problem is over. As a matter of fact, it appears there are too many jobs and not enough people remaining in the workforce to fill the posted positions. I wish this was the case, but the sad truth is that the state's high unemployment rate is higher than the national average. There are jobs available out there however. Not ones created by Governor Granholm, or President Obama, but by "Uncle Sam." They are census jobs. If the signs that line Michigan's roadside are any indication, there seems to be a shortage of people who are willing to do the work during this once a decade, head count. Now these may not be the highest paying jobs, but they certainly aren't the lowest either. Surely they are paying better than many of the unemployment checks being delivered to the areaás mailboxe.

Murch, March & Madness
Mon, March 15, 2010 @ 2:53PM
I have to hand it to Steve Murch, Apena News Managing Editor, he know's how to pick a winner. Almost. Steve a few minutes ago updated his blog and offered readers his picks in the NCAA basketball tournament affectionally known as March Madness. You can read his blog and check out his picks. Once there, you will see he has the national championship game featuring Kansas and West Virginia. Kansas was last year's national champion, currently is ranked number one in the country and was generally picked by most at the beginning of the year to fare well, which they have. West Virginia, meanwhile, never was ranked number one this year, plays in the very tough BIg East Conference and just barely snuck by Georgetown to win that conference's championship Saturday in New York City. The last time they won a national championship Jerry West was their point guard. Common sense tells you, like Steve did, to go with Kansas. Not m.

Sheer talent
Tue, March 2, 2010 @ 4:53PM
The numbers were certainly good. More than 150 people turned out last Sunday afternoon at Alpena County Library for a special "Music at the Library" concert. While that definitely is a healthy-sized audience for an event like that, for those not in attendance, it was a true missed opportunity to soak in and savor some of the outstanding musical talent found right here in Alpena. Pianist Loretta Beyer, who counts herself extremely lucky to be able to do what she loves - teach piano at Alpena Community College and privately - joined forces with pianist Linda Jones and vocalist Jennifer Jasso. The three took turns either playing or singing, a format that flowed smoothly and kept everyone fully engaged. Loretta demonstrates a true mastery of her instrument, and her personality is such that her students adore her - and rightfully so. She opened the concert with a piece by Schumann, captivating the audience right from the get go.
