Bell takes only lead in OT for thrilling NASCAR win

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Christopher Bell celebrated a drought-ending victory for himself and Joe Gibbs Racing after a dramatic comeback in Atlanta. Bell edged Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson in overtime Sunday in another close NASCAR Cup Series finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Bell led only the final lap in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and had a slight edge on the outside when the caution light came on in overtime following a wreck by Josh Berry. “That last lap of the race we were at our best,” Bell said. It was the first victory for Joe Gibbs Racing since Bell’s win at New ...

Europe deserves its humiliation

Europe has been warned, and warned again. Still, it has been reduced to a near-fainting fit — and, in the case of one German official, actual tears — over the Trump administration’s tough words about its deficient military spending and U.S. moves to begin negotiating on its own with Russia over the Ukraine war. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron called an emergency summit of European leaders, which his advisers insisted wasn’t an emergency summit at all, but merely a rapidly assembled informal meeting. Whatever the nomenclature, there are signs that Europe is ...

Downsizing happens all the time

Chelsea Milburn is a disabled veteran of the United States Navy who, until recently, worked for the United States Department of Education. As part of cuts from the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, she has lost her job. On Wednesday, she appeared on the news and lamented, “They don’t care about how this impacts me or people like me. And to me, it’s inhumane. It feels like they’re ignoring our personhood and not respecting us as human beings or as American citizens.” She is not wrong. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have channeled their inner Miley Cyrus ...

A crisis president rides into town

A bright, clear Presidents’ Day in Washington: a perfect moment in time and place to say what makes the best and worst of presidents. For historians, the pattern is indelible. The American people show who the great presidents are, because they bring out the best in us. The opposite is also true. Three weeks into his second round, power-mad Donald Trump is the worst, going away. He appeals to the darkness in our character every single day and way. Trump, in three weeks, radically expanded his role and caused tidal waves of misery and grief at home and abroad. With tariffs and mass ...

Michigan lawmaker beats out Trump ally for GOP party chair

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan Republicans gathered in Detroit on Saturday to elect a new chair who will lead the party into the 2026 midterms in the battleground state, when several key races will be decided including a critical U.S. Senate seat. A state lawmaker beat out two other candidates, including a loyal ally to President Donald Trump who is charged with acting as a fake elector for Trump in 2020 and had his endorsement for the chair position. The convention began as a victory lap celebrating Republican wins in the fall — including flipping the state for Trump — before quickly ...
