China threatens our medical care

China has a death grip on our medical supplies and consequently our ability to survive. It is the sole manufacturer of one hundred medications we commonly use, including antibiotics and blood thinners, and is the largest supplier of nitrate gloves, masks, syringes and other medical equipment essential in hospitals. China has threatened to weaponize its monopoly on these supplies to throw our hospitals into chaos, stress us in our death beds, and watch us suffer. When your enemy issues a threat like that, believe it. China’s state-run media publication, Xinhua, warned soon after ...

Is Kilmar Abrego Garcia a criminal?

Is Kilmar Abrego Garcia a good person? I don’t know. In 2021 his wife petitioned for, and received, an order of protection against him after she alleged domestic violence; she said last week that their marriage grew stronger after they worked through that low point and that Abrego Garcia “has always been a loving partner and father.” The government has claimed that he is a member of a truly heinous criminal gang, MS-13. If that were true, given that he was in the United States illegally, I’d have no problem with deporting him, though perhaps not to a prison that our own State ...

It’s the economy. It’s the economy.

Many in the Democratic base are frustrated that their party isn’t pounding away at Donald Trump over his attacks on the rule of law, academic independence and decency. That’s not quite the case. Democrats and others opposed to the president’s toxic agenda are seeing some success in the courts. In Congress, however, Democrats currently have little power to stop him. Beating up on their politicians for not doing what they are unable to do is not helping the cause. Preparing a slate of electable Democrats able to trounce the Republican bobbleheads in the midterms would be the more ...

When a wrong narrative hides truth

In politics, creating and then owning the narrative is the best way to deceive the public, especially when a compliant media helps promote it and ignores later information that contradicts the initial narrative. Such has been the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a native of El Salvador, who violated U.S. immigration laws and has lived in Maryland for the last 13 years. The media describe him as a “Maryland man” simply because he has been living in that state, but for fewer years than he lived in his native country. The Department of Homeland Security characterizes him quite ...

Stars and Stripes meant home

In a couple of months, I am planning a business trip to Europe. I don’t scare easy, but despite the fact that I’m an American citizen and have committed no crime, I am worried about what might happen when I attempt to come home. Will Customs and Border Patrol agents pull me from the customs line as they did to Amir Makled? He’s an American citizen, too, a lawyer born and raised in Detroit who was returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic. But he happens to represent a pro-Palestinian student protester. CBP detained Makled and demanded access to his phone. CBP can demand ...

Weaponization of federal government

There simply is no balderdash that Donald Trump hasn’t elevated to an art form, a point so obvious by now that it’s ceased to register. Lately, the Balderdash-O-Meter seems to crash hourly, as the president who claimed with a straight face to be running against a “weaponized” Biden administration devotes himself full throttle to weaponizing executive power against his opponents, writing a dark proto-fascist chapter of American history unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. Trump’s campaign tirades about being the supposed victim of a Biden administration witch hunt were ...
