ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools is currently looking for a new transportation supervisor as they continue to struggle with bus route cancellations.
APS Director of Communications Lee Fitzpatrick said the district’s former transportation supervisor, Brook Krajniak, resigned from her position sometime “in the last week.”
Fitzpatrick would share no further information on the reason for Krajniak’s departure, citing personnel matters.
It is currently unknown what the impact of not having a transportation supervisor will have on bus routes. Asked about the potential impact, Fitzpatrick stated he “can’t comment on that.”
APS has been dealing with a number of bus route cancellations with Bus 15-B, for the Ella White Elementary School area, not picking up secondary and primary students for morning or afternoon today, and Bus 19-B, for the Wilson Elementary School area, not picking up secondary and primary students for morning or afternoon either Friday or Monday.
Those disruptions, according to Fitzpatrick, are the result of staffing shortages.
“We are canceling bus routes on a daily basis due to staff shortages,” said Fitzpatrick. “It’s very difficult for our families and kids are missing out on their opportunities.”
The transportation supervisor position is currently being advertised on the APS’s Facebook page, along with other transportation positions such as transportation dispatcher, bus attendant, bus driver, and relief driver.
Statewide demand for those positions means that it is unknown when they can be filled.
“It’s a very difficult job market for businesses looking to hire, which is practically everyone right now,” said Fitzpatrick. “We need people who are willing to do the work.”
