PREP ROUNDUP: Hillman gets plenty of offense in NSL opener

Hillman sweeps NSL opener

HILLMAN–The Tigers opened up North Star League play with a bang on Thursday, topping Mio 19-5 and 27-17.

In the opener, Nicole Barbeau earned her first win in her first start of the season, allowing four hits and striking out nine in five innings.

Saige Flaugher had four hits for Hillman, including two doubles and a triple; Barbeau and Julia Taratuta each had three hits.

In the second game, Melanie Morrison earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out six in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Cassidy Benac hit a grand slam for the Tigers and finished with six RBI; Taratuta had four hits, including two doubles and a triple and Kylee Green had three hits.

Hillman hosts a tournament on Saturday with Oscoda, Rogers City and Tawas.

Tawas tops Rogers City

ROGERS CITY–The Hurons played Thursday’s doubleheader closer than the 10-2 and 10-5 scores indicated, but still came up short.

In the opener, Rogers City led 2-0 after five innings, but the Braves played four unearned runs in the sixth inning and continued to build a lead from there.

Chloe Hentkowski had two hits for Rogers City and Karissa Rabeau, Jeffra Dittmar and Grace Garrison each had a hit.

Rogers City led 6-5 after five innings in the second game, but again Tawas was the victor. Hentkowski had a hit and Rabeau, Garrison, Dittmar and Kaitlyn Nowicki each had a double.

Posen splits with Owls

OSCODA–The Vikings split a doubleheader with Oscoda Thursday, winning the first game 7-4 and dropping the second game 17-2.

Posen built a 4-0 lead in the opener after two innings and added one run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth.

Makayla Kamyszek, Ava Wesner, Faith Cousins and Halie Konieczny each had two hits for Posen. Wesner had a home run and three RBI; Cousins had two RBI and Cousins and Wesner each had a triple. Kamyszek earned the win, striking out eight and allowing four earned runs on six hits.

A 12-run first inning was the boost the Owls needed in the nightcap. Posen runs came in the third inning to cut the lead to 13-2.

Lizzy Romel, Wesner, Jocelyn Hincka and Kamyszek each had a hit for Posen. Romel and Cousins each had an RBI.

GIRLS SOCCER

Petoskey 3, Alpena 0

PETOSKEY–The Northmen got the better of Alpena on Thursday, breaking a scoreless tie at halftime with three second-half goals. Alpena (1-2) had a breakaway opportunity and some other chances, but couldn’t find the back of the net in its first Big North Conference game of the season.

Alpena hosts Gaylord on Tuesday
