MHSAA announces football playoff changes

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced on Friday its plans for an adjusted playoff format for 11 and 8-Player football for the 2020 postseason.

Nearly every team in Michigan will get a chance to play a seventh game this season, after a six-game regular season. The playoff fields for both 11 and 8-Player football have been doubled.

The 11-Player playoff field will include 512 teams with a schedule of three district rounds, regional finals, semifinals and finals.

The MHSAA has placed teams in pre-arranged divisions based on enrollment. Teams in those districts will be seeded 1-8 tased on their playoff point totals. Teams with the highest averages will host at the district and regional levels.

The schedule is as follows:

∫ District Tournament–Oct. 30-Nov. 14

∫ Regional Tournament–Nov. 20 or Nov. 21

∫ Semifinals–Nov. 27-28

∫ Finals–Dec. 5-6

Per the MHSAA, the district groupings for local teams include:

Division 2

Region 5, District 11–Alpena, Traverse City Central, Swartz Creek, Saginaw Heritage, Midland Dow, Midland, Flushing and Flint Carman-Ainsworth.

Division 7

Region 25, District 50–Oscoda, St. Louis, McBain, LeRoy Pine River, Houghton Lake, Farwell, Evart and Beaverton.

Division 8

Region 29, District 57–Rogers City, West Iron County, St. Ignace, Norway, Iron Mountain, Gwinn, East Jordan and Bark River-Harris.

Region 29, District 58–Alcona, Beal City, Breckenridge, Coleman, Frankfort, Johannesburg-Lewiston, Manton and Saginaw Nouvel.

The 8-Player field includes 64 teams with a schedule of three regional rounds, semifinals and finals.

The top 32 teams in each division based on their playoff-point totals will qualify for the playoffs. Brackets will be drawn and then announced on Oct. 25. Teams with higher point totals will host regional and semifinal games.

The schedule is as follows:
