ACC women start slow, drop home finale to Skippers

A slow start proved to be costly for the Alpena Community College women’s basketball team on Monday.

The Lumberjacks honored their six sophomores before the game, but unfortunately for Alpena, only half of them were able to suit up in the home finale as Emma Jore, Shelby Seaver and Kyra Feighner are out for the season with injuries, so Dakota Prevo, Brooke Nguyen and Abby Larsen were relied to provide a spark in their final home game at ACC.

Being shorthanded once again hurt the Lumberjacks and so did a dreadful first quarter in a 68-47 loss to St. Clair County Community College at Park Arena.

Prevo opened the game with a basket, but the Skippers scored 13 consecutive points to take a big lead early.

Prevo scored finished with a game-high 17 points in her final game at Park Arena, including all six of Alpena’s first quarter points as the Lumberjacks dug themselves a big hole after one quarter as they trailed 21-6.

Alpena tried to do all it could in the second quarter as it knocked down four of their five baskets from beyond the three point line and cut the lead to 31-20 with a minute remaining in the half thanks to eight unanswered points. But St. Clair cashed in on a pair of free-throws in the final second to take a 33-20 lead into the break.

Alpena continued to do its best to chip away at the lead and cut the deficit to 10 early in the third quarter. It was close as the home team was able to get the rest of the evening as the Skippers went on an 8-0 run of its own to take an 18-point lead. The Skippers closed the quarter scoring seven unanswered to take a commanding 57-33 lead.

The Lumberjacks were in need of a big quarter and despite the fourth quarter being their best one offensively, it wasn’t nearly enough as St. Clair was able to cruise to a big victory and spoil the special send-off for the ACC sophomores.

Along with Prevo, Brooke Nguyen scored 11 points in her final home game at ACC. Mollie Girard added eight points and Karah Dunson chipped in with seven points.

St. Clair had a trio of players score double figures as HaLaya Cato scored a team high 16 points, Brooklyn Taylor finished with 13 points and Janae Smith added 10 points in the win.

The Lumberjacks will wrap up the 2019-2020 season on Wednesday when they travel to Macomb to take on the undefeated (28-0) Monarchs.
