PREP ROUNDUP: Big second quarter keys Onaway win

ONAWAY–Sisters Taylor and Nicole Larson scored 19 and 12 points respectively and the Onaway girls basketball team used a big second quarter to run by Fife Lake Forest Area 57-33 on Monday.

Onaway (4-5) led 9-8 after one quarter and then ramped up its defense to take a 36-16 halftime lead.

“We started off stagnant. I don’t know if we were out of sync because it was a Monday or what,” Onaway coach John George said. “We cranked up the defense and started pressing.”

Jillian Chaskey added nine points for Onaway and Breya Domke had eight points.

Onaway hosts Pellston on Friday.

Oscoda 58, Atlanta 12

OSCODA–Lauren Langley scored 18 points and the Oscoda girls basketball team improved to 8-3 with a 58-12 win over Atlanta on Monday.

Izzy Hulverson added 10 points and Macy Kellstrom had nine for the Owls, who will host Posen on Friday.

Oscoda previously defeated Whittemore-Prescott 69-28 on Friday. Hulverson had 21 points, Kellstrom had 18 and Langley had 17.

Atlanta lost to Hale 35-25 on Friday. Tanaysja Tidwell led Atlanta with seven points, four assists and three steals and Jordan Kobielus had seven points, four assists and six rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Oscoda 82, Atlanta 27

OSCODA–Owen Franklin scored 22 points and was one of three Oscoda boys basketball players to finish in double figures as the Owls beat Atlanta 82-27 on Monday.

Gabe Kellstrom added 19 points for Oscoda (8-0), Brayden Mallak had 15 points and Michael Gepfrey had nine.

Zach Roux led Atlanta with eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Oscoda plays at Posen on Thursday.

Alcona 66, Fairview 35

LINCOLN–The Alcona boys basketball team got a total team effort on Monday.

Aidan Wrobel scored 15 points and was one of three Alcona plays to finish in double figures as Alcona topped Fairview 66-35.

Robbie Barbara added 14 points for Alcona (3-6), Dominic Howe had 13 and Mason Clark and DJ Howe each had eight.

Alcona led 17-10 after one quarter, 25-15 at halftime and 47-19 after three quarters.

“We had a very good third quarter and second half which hasn’t always been the case this year,” Alcona coach Ryan Bilbey said. “It was good to see everyone on the team contribute to a great team win.”

Grant Lietzke led Fairview with 10 points and Isaiah Ford had seven.

Alcona plays at Hillman on Thursday.
