Gentry, USA win Gold Medal

The United States U18 women’s hockey team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime on Thursday to capture the Gold Medal.

The Vladimir Dzurilla Arena in Bratislava hosted the world’s top-two teams and they didn’t disappoint.

Kiara Zanon scored the game-winning goal 16:52 into overtime on a breakaway.

The US opened the scoring 14:38 into the first period on a power play goal from Abbey Murphy.

Canada’s Sarah Paul tied the game at a goal apiece on a power play goal 5:38 into the third period.

Canada had another power play chance late in the third period, but couldn’t convert as US goaltender Skylar Vetter stopped 31 of the 32 shots she faced in the win as the US avenged last years 3-2 championship game loss to Canada.

A wild, high paced, back and forth opening period of play went by until a stoppage was needed after two U.S. players inadvertently collided at top speed in Canada’s zone, both needing a while to be able to get up. Alpena’s Emma Gentry, one of the heroes in the semi-final victory over Russia, took the brunt of the collision, effectively taking her out of play for most of the night.

Gentry received her gold medal along with the rest of the US U18 women’s hockey team after the victory.

Gentry saw a substantial amount of ice time and scored a pivotal goal in the win over Russia in the semifinals during her teams quest to capture the gold.
