LINCOLN–The Alcona girls basketball team shook off some rust and put another W in the win column on Tuesday.

Liz Henderson and Megan Grove scored 11 points each and seven different players scored for Alcona in a 42-22 win over Mio at Alcona High School.

The win is the fifth straight for the Tigers (5-1) following a loss in their season opener.

Moving the ball well, controlling the boards and stifling Mio with defense, the Tigers started the game on a 7-0 run and led 13-2 after eight minutes. The lead eventually grew to 27-8 at halftime and 34-20 after three quarters.

“It was a win. It was a little sluggish (because) we haven’t played in awhile,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “It was nice to get back on the court tonight. Everybody saw a lot of action.”

Mio, which played with a combined roster of JV and varsity players due to illness, played well in a few spurts in the second half. But the Thunderbolts were mightly outrebounded and struggled against Alcona’s press. Often, the Thunderbolts were forced into taking perimeter shots as the game wore on.

Mio cut Alcona’s lead to 14 to end the third quarter, but it marked Mio’s high point of the game as they were held to two points in the final quarter.

“We got after them pretty early in the game and set the tone for us,” Feldhiser said. “There were a couple times where we got a little lazy on defense, but it is what it is. After a long break, I think we played above average tonight.”

On offense, Alcona got everyone involved while attacking Mio from all angles. Alcona’s control on the glass led to easy buckets in the paint, but the Tigers also had success shooting from outside and driving the lane.

“We had good balance on offense, so we’ll take that,” Feldhiser said. “I thought we had a lot of good looks into our post, which is something we’ve been working on so we can do that more often.”

Kelsey Hansen added eight points for Alcona and Lily Bilbey and Anna Loyer each had four.

Sienna Lunning led Mio with eight points and Phynix Rickett added six points.

Alcona plays at Oscoda on Friday.
