Wildcats rally to tie GRCC in Gaylord

GAYLORD–The Alpena High hockey hockey team came out of a weekend showcase with another impressive performance, tying Grand Rapids Catholic Central 2-2 on Saturday.

The Wildcats (1-4-2) tied Flint Powers 2-2 on Friday during the first day of the showcase in Gaylord.

Alpena fell behind 2-0 after two periods on Saturday, but battled back and even had a chance to win the game in regulation.

It’s all about getting the kids to work together and this weekend we learned what we can do when we do that,” Alpena coach Chris Limback said. “We had a good week of practice and I think the kids learned what happens (in games) when they put in the hard work in practice.”

Anden Marceau cut the Cougars’ lead in half early in the third period, scoring with an assist from Blaise Keller.

Keller then knotted the game with about five minutes left, scoring on an assist from Mitch Agius. The Wildcats had a breakaway chance with about a minute to play but missed the opportunity.

Jimmy Bolanowski made 30 saves for Alpena in goal.

Alpena returns to the ice this weekend with two games in Traverse City. Alpena will play Traverse City Central on Friday and Traverse City West on Saturday in their first two Big North Conference games of the season.

“Hopefully (this weekend) was a springboard for us where we can keeping working together and keep growing,” Limback said.
