Hillman falls in season opener to Cardinals

WHITTEMORE–The Hillman boys basketball team got off to a good start in its season opener on Monday, but struggled down the stretch and ultimately fell to Whittemore-Prescott 57-49.

Gunner Mellingen had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Tigers, who led 10-6 after one quarter, but were outscored 23-8 in the second quarter.

“The second quarter and third quarter was the tale of the game. We got outscored 37-14 and we had a bad stretch there,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “Midway through the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, we started to get more aggressive on offense.”

Hillman outscored Whittemore 25-14 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough to make up the deficit.

Sean Henigan added 11 points and seven rebounds for Hillman, Dawson Ableidinger had nine points and Caleb Hiveley had 10 rebounds.

“We were a little banged up, but we played well,” Muszynski said.

Dana Thorson led Whittemore with 33 points.

Hillman hosts Hale on Thursday.
