Seven Wildcats named to Big North first team

After a 4-5 season in which it went 3-2 in Big North Conference play, the Alpena High football team was rewarded with a record number of all-conference selections for the 2019 season.

The Wildcats had seven players named to the first team and 12 players honored overall with two second-teamers, two honorable mentions and a special mentions.

Senior running backs Eli Winter and Jordan Schultz took two of the three first team running back spots along with Traverse City Central’s Austin Bullis.

Winter led Alpena in rushing with 990 yards, 10 touchdowns and two successful two-point conversions on 169 carries. He also caught nine balls for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Schultz ran for 809 yards, eight touchdowns and a conversion on 105 carries.

Senior Mitchell Pfeifer earned first-team honors on the offensive line and Kelley Stark earned the same honor at wide receiver. Stark was one of the conference’s top receivers, catching 22 balls for 361 yards and two scores.

On the defensive side of the ball, Alec Zielaskowski earned first-team honors at linebacker and Nick Schaub was first-team choice on the defensive line. Zielaskowski had 81 tackles for the Wildcats as well as one sack, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Schaub had 46 tackles, five sacks and a forced fumble.

Charlie Williams rounded out Alpena’s first-team selections as a special teams specialist.

Senior offensive lineman Sam Romero and sophomore linebacker Kaydn Budnick earned second-team honors. Romero had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery and Budnick had 32 tackles.

Junior lineman Alan Johnson, and sophomore quarterback Ryan Voltz earned honorable mentions and senior lineman Isaac Wohlford earned a special mention.
