Mellingen’s big night propels Hillman to victory

HILLMAN — Last year’s all-Alpena News eight-man player of the year Gunner Mellingen displayed why he is so dangerous on Friday night as he put the Hillman Tigers on his back and propelled them to a 54-42 win over Hale.

Mellingen finished with 404 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, while recording 15 tackles and an interception.

Hillman quarterback Nash Steinke ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and was 6-for-11 through the air for 151 yards and two passing touchdowns.

Dawson Abledinger recorded 11 tackles and two sacks to lead the defense.

Hillman improves to 2-0 on the year and will have a bye week next week before returning to action on Week 4 against Au Gres.

VOLLEYBALL

Hurons swept by Whittemore-Prescott

WHITTEMORE — The Rogers City volleyball team was swept on Thursday when they traveled to Whittemore-Prescott, losing to the Cardinals by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21.

Kyrsten Altman led the Hurons with 15 assists, seven digs, two aces and one block. Brooke Saile added six kills, Jeffra Dittmar added 21 digs, Kristin Brege recorded 13 digs and McKenna Fessler chipped in with three kills and a pair of aces.

Rogers City is 0-1 in North Star League play.

Hillman swept by Mio

MIO — The Hillman volleyball team was ont he receiving end of a sweep at Mio on Thursday, losing by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-8.

The Tigers were led by Melanie Morrison who had 10 digs, five kills, two aces and 1 assists. Ellie Crawford added 17 digs and two aces, Emma Libby finished with 15 digs, two kills and two aces, Angelina Hunt added three digs, two kills and an ace and Makenna Grulke chipped in with three kills, two digs, one block and one ace.
