Local softball players honored for 2019 play

Several local softball players earned all-state honors from the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association for their play during the 2019 season.

After a run to the Division 4 semifinals, senior shortstop Taylor Fleming and junior pitcher Kyrsten Altman both earned first team all-state honors.

Altman was Rogers City’s ace and finished with a 19-6 record. In 145 innings pitched, Altman pitched 16 complete games and struck out 189 batters while allowing 80 hits.

Fleming was one of Rogers City’s top hitters and gave the Hurons experience at the No. 2 spot in the batting order. She batted .459 for the season with 39 hits, including eight home runs, eight triples and 35 RBI.

After one of its best seasons in several years, which included a district championship, Onaway had three players named to the all-state first team.

Selke was one of the best pitchers in Northern Michigan all season and holds Onaway records in strikeouts (692) and wins (49) after a four-year varsity career.

Metty, a shortstop, batted .548 this season with 57 hits, 59 runs scored and 51 RBI, all Onaway single-season records.

Crawford, an outfielder, was Onaway’s leadoff hitter and also shared pitching duties with Selke.

Posen senior catcher Brooke Ciarkowski earned an all-state honorable mention after batting .636 with two home runs, 32 RBI, 10 doubles and four triples.

Rogers City’s senior catcher, Amanda Wirgau, also earned an honorable mention after batting .515 with 34 RBI and 18 doubles from Rogers City’s cleanup spot.

Alpena had a pair of honorable mentions in Division 1: second baseman Abbie Funk and third baseman Jade Schultz.

Funk batted .400 for Alpena with 56 hits, 25 RBI and 13 doubles. She had a fielding percentage of .962 with 57 assists.

Schultz batted .440 with 12 home runs and had eight games with at least three hits. She finished with 39 RBI and 55 hits, including 12 doubles.

ALL-REGION

Several players also earned all-region honors for their 2019 play.

Onaway had four players named to the all-region team–Crawford, Metty, Selke and Britney Buczkowski–and Onaway coach Jodi Brewbaker was regional coach of the year.

Rogers City had four all-region players–Altman, Fleming, Wirgau and Catheryn Hart–and Rogers City coach Karl Grambau was also a regional coach of the year.

For Posen, Ciarkowski, Makayla Kamyszek and Elizabeth Romel all earned all-region honors.

For Alpena, Allie Funk, Emma Fraser and Riley Alexander earned all-region honors.

ALL-CONFERENCE

After successful seasons, more than two dozen local players earned all-conference honors.

After sharing the Ski Valley Conference title, Selke, Metty, Crawford and Jordan Larson earned first-team all-conference honors. Buczkowski earned a second-team nod and Kyli Brewbaker earned an honorable mention.

After Alpena secured another Big North Conference title, Abbie Funk, Schultz, Sydney Chojnacki, Fraser, Allie Funk and Lilly Lewis all earned all-conference honors.

Rogers City and Posen won the Big Dipper and Little Dipper titles in softball respectively and conference honors are as follows:
